Rick J. Ashworth, LCSW
Rick has over 25 years of experience in public mental health clinics and private practice agencies as a psychotherapist and pastoral counselor. His primary practice focus is family life dynamics including the counseling of individuals, couples, children (ages 5-12), teens, and young adults. He is experienced in multidisciplinary treatment of severe mental health issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, as well as ADHD, anxiety, stress, and adjustment disorders.
Rick has a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. He was licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a clinical social worker (LCSW) in 1982. In 1980, he became the youngest Mental Health Clinic Director in VA. He served as Director of Mental Health Clinics for the City of Chesapeake, and Wythe/Bland Counties. He also created a treatment center at Danville Regional Medical Center for children with parents struggling with substance abuse. In addition, Rick is an ordained Minister.
Rick embraces the values of self-determination, dignity and respect for all people in his practice. His personal experiences in overcoming a turbulent childhood riddled with parental substance abuse makes him passionate about helping others achieve a healthy family life. Rick now resides in Newport News with his loving wife, Vivian. They are blessed with four children and three grandchildren.
