Hampton Roads Christian Counseling

Hampton Roads Christian Counselor Tracey Crawley Amanda N. Trent, Psy.D.

Dr. Amanda Trent received her B.A. in Psychology from William Tyndale College in Farmington Hills, Michigan. She later moved to Virginia Beach, VA, to complete her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Regent University. Dr. Trent has been a resident of Williamsburg for 3 years after relocating to work at Genesis Counseling Center in both the Hampton and Williamsburg offices. She received her licensure in the commonwealth of Virginia in August of 2011. Her training includes spiritually integrated therapy, and she enjoys helping others develop their own spiritual resources and use their faith as a way to cope with life’s struggles and stresses. She also has received training in neurofeedback treatment at the EEG Info Institute in Woodland Hills, CA, Level 1 Sexual Identity Therapy through the Institute for the Study of Sexual Identity, as well asTrauma Focused Cognitive Therapy. Although Dr. Trent has worked with all ages, her specialty and love is in providing individual and group therapy to children and adolescents who have experienced some type of trauma or abuse. She has a combined total of 10 years experience working in a residential setting and outpatient practice, providing individual and family counseling to children and adolescents. Her specific area of interest for research and practice is helping foster parents provide care for children who may have special needs. To that end, Dr. Trent co-authored a curriculum for therapeutic foster parents and uses excerpts and behavior modification techniques from that training in order to assist parents in managing difficult behaviors.

Dr. Trent is interpersonal in the way that she approaches clients, emphasizing the important role that the relationship plays in successful therapy. Building trust and modeling good listening skills and clear boundaries are key to Dr. Trent’s work with children and adolescents. In addition to focusing on the relationship, Dr. Trent uses the principles of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) with most of her adolescent and adult clients. These principles address several important areas including practicing mindfulness in everyday situations, learning ways to manage one’s emotions, and increasing a person’s ability to be effective in their relationships. Dr. Trent has found that incorporating DBT skills into the therapy process has been helpful for many people who struggle with a wide variety of concerns. Not only can they be helpful in managing depression and anxiety, but also suicidal feelings, self-harming behaviors, drug and alcohol abuse, and other concerns. Dr. Trent was born and raised outside Detroit, Michigan, and travels there to visit friends and family as much as possible. She attends Williamsburg Community Chapel, enjoys cooking gourmet meals, and is an avid crime novel reader.
